Ariel Chesler
The Hon. Ariel Chesler is a judge of the New York County Supreme Court.
Trellis Law indicates Chesler was previously a judge for the Bronx County Family Court in the Twelfth Judicial District of New York. He was initially elected to the Civil Court of the City of New York in 2019 and then designated to the Family Court that same year.
Chesler received his B.A. from Brandeis University in 2000. He went on to earn his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 2003. While in law school, Chesler served an internship at the Center for Reproductive Rights. Then, after graduating from law school, he entered into private practice, working in that capacity until 2006.
At that time, Chesler joined the New York Court System, where he first worked as an appellate court attorney for the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division, First Department. He would remain there until 2015 when he became the principal law clerk for the Hon. Peter Tom, an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department. Chesler served in that capacity until his election to the Civil Court in 2019.
Chesler’s memberships have included serving as the co-chair of the New York Women’s Bar Continuing Legal Education Committee and as president of the Tenants Association. He has also served as a mentor for the LGBT Bar Association and a small claims arbitrator for the Harlem Community Justice Center.
Chesler is a prolific writer and author, having had his work appear in Time and the Huffington Post. His mother, Phyllis Chesler, is also a well-known author, a feminist leader, and an Emerita Professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies at CUNY. During his childhood, Chesler marched alongside his mother in women’s rights protests in Washington, D.C. and New York.
