Ta-Tanisha James
The Hon. Ta-Tanish James is a judge of the New York County Supreme Court.
Trellis Law indicates James was previously a judge for the New York City Housing Court in New York County. She was designated to the Housing Court bench in 2016 by the Hon. Lawrence K. Marks, Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York. Prior to being designated to the Housing Court, she had been elected to serve as a judge for the New York County Civil Court during that same year.
James received her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 1998. Before pursuing her law degree, she taught elementary and junior high school students at P.S. 67 in the Bronx.
James began her legal career with the New York State Unified Court System in 2000. She first worked as a senior law clerk to the Hon. George Bundy Smith, Justice of the New York State Court of Appeals. In 2002, she also became a principal law clerk to the Hon. Robert Lippman and the Hon. Gloria M. Dabiri. Though she left her senior law clerk position in 2003, she continued her work for Judge Lippman and Judge Dabiri until 2006. James entered private practice in 2007, serving as an assistant managing attorney for Kaye Scholer LLP. During her five years with the firm, she handled a busy caseload while also managing its staff and training other attorneys. She returned to the Unified Court System in 2012, resuming her work as a principal law clerk, this time to the Hon. Lottie E. Wilkins, Justice of the New York County Supreme Court. James was serving in that capacity at the time of her election to the bench.
James’ memberships have included the New York County Guardianship Advisory Committee, the International Women’s Health Coalition, the Guardian’s Society, the Women’s Health Care Council of the Columbia University Medical Center and the Board of Directors of the Education Clinic.
